About the event
On February 19, 1941, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order ("EO") 9066. It authorized the United States military to designate areas in the U.S. as military zones from which persons whom the military deemed to be threats, could be excluded. EO 9066 opened the door for the mass "relocation" and incarceration over 120,000 Japanese Americans and Japanese living in the U.S. when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. Each year, on or about February 19, the Japanese American Citizens League ("JACL") hosts events in remembrance of the signing of EO 9066, with the goal that such an abuse of civil rights will never happen again.
This year, Alaska Chapter JACL, in partnership with Alaska Public Media and the ZJ Loussac Anchorage Public Library is hosting a free screening of Betrayed: Surviving An American Concentration Camp, for the 2023 Day of Remembrance.
